How to Make (Good) Money Copywriting

How to Make (Good) Money Copywriting

Introduction

If you’re reading this, you’re probably curious about how to make money copywriting. Spoiler alert: it’s entirely possible, but it's not the cake-walk those "8-figure entrepreneurs" leaning on their Porsches would have you believe.

With the right skills and a bit of strategy, you can turn your passion for writing into a lucrative career - but you're going to have to earn your stripes, set up smart systems and adopt a mindset of continuous learning and adaptation to the market.

Sorry, I know none of that screams 'overnight millionaire' - but if that's what you're looking for, you're on the wrong person's website! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Understanding Copywriting

First off, let’s chat about what copywriting actually is, because it's NOT anything to do with copyright law (common mistake, don't worry!)

In simple terms, it’s the art of writing persuasive text that inspires action. Whether that’s getting someone to buy a product, sign up for a newsletter, or click on a link, effective copy is the secret sauce to successful marketing.

You’ll find copywriting everywhere: on websites, in emails, on social media - you name it. And guess what? Businesses are always on the lookout for talented copywriters to help them stand out in the crowded digital landscape.

Building Your Copywriting Skills

To set yourself apart as a skilled copywriter, you’ll need to master a few key skills. Here’s what you should focus on:

  • Persuasive Writing: Learn how to craft words that move people to take action.
  • Understanding Consumer Psychology: Get inside your audience's head - what do they want and need?
  • Research Skills: Be a detective! Knowing your stuff can make your copy more credible and compelling. And AI is your friend here, let's not pretend otherwise.

Not sure where to start? There are plenty of online courses, books, and resources out there to help you level up your copywriting game. But I'm biased, I suggest joining my Copy College® membership if you're looking for the basics, or my 6-month mentorship programme Paid to Write if you want to get serious about, well - getting paid to write! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Finding Your Niche

I won't lie to you: The copywriting market is pretty saturated. That’s why finding your niche is essential! When you specialise, you position yourself as an expert, making it easier to attract clients who need your unique skills.

I think of it like playing darts - if you have a clear bullseye, you're more likely to hit the board. Choosing a niche and specialising doesn't mean other people won't want to work with you - but having super clear and targeted messaging means your dream clients won't want to go anywhere else. So...

Think about what excites you. ๐Ÿคฉ

Is it health and wellness? Finance? Tech? Finding a niche that aligns with your passions can make your work not just profitable but also enjoyable.

Building a Portfolio

Your portfolio is your calling card as a copywriter. It showcases your best work and demonstrates your skills to potential clients. But it's also a phrase that strikes fear in the heart of many aspiring or new copywriters, because they haven't been shown how to create one, and think it involves complex magic and putting in their 10,000 hours.

Here’s how to make yours shine:

  • Keep it simple: A Google Drive or Dropbox Folder is fine! โค๏ธ
  • Include a variety of writing samples relevant to your niche.
  • Use real-world examples that highlight your ability to achieve results.
  • Add testimonials from satisfied clients to build credibility.

If you’re just starting out and don’t have client work yet, consider creating sample projects or volunteering for non-profits. This can help you build a portfolio that grabs attention.

Networking and Finding Clients

Networking is everything in this (any) business! Here’s how to connect with potential clients:

  • Online Networking: Join social media groups or LinkedIn communities focused on copywriting. Engage and build relationships.
  • Local Networking: Attend industry events or workshops to meet clients in person.
  • Join Memberships: Join a few memberships or communities where your ideal clients might hang out. I hear Copy College® is pretty fun! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Remember, every connection can lead to new opportunities. Don’t shy away from reaching out!

Setting Your Rates

Now, let’s talk about money - because well - making money is the goal, right? Setting your rates can feel daunting, but here are some tips:

  • Research Competitors: Check out what other copywriters in your niche are charging to ensure your rates are competitive. But don't get too hung up on this - the range is widdddeee and you'll drive yourself crazy playing the comparison game.
  • Hourly vs. Project-Based Pricing: Decide what works best for you. Both have their pros and cons (big fan of package or project based pricing though, personally!)
  • Value-Based Pricing: Think about the value you bring to clients. Sometimes, it’s worth charging a premium for your expertise and experience.
  • Market Positioning: Figure out where in the range of the market your ideal client is, and establish yourself as the right fit for the right person.

Note: The weird, best-kept secret people won't tell you is that high earners often want to buy high-ticket. I once got told by a coach of mine that she hadn't recommended me to a friend because "I didn't charge enough" (even though she knew I was great at what I do). Make of that what you will. ๐Ÿ‘€

Promoting Your Services

Once you’re ready to roll, it’s time to put yourself out there! Here are some strategies to promote your copywriting services:

  • Create a Personal Website: Showcase your services, portfolio, and testimonials. This is your online business card!
  • Leverage Social Media: Use platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn to share your insights and connect with potential clients.
  • Guest Blogging: Write guest posts for reputable sites in your niche to increase your visibility.

Building a strong personal brand is essential to attracting clients and making money.

Conclusion

So, there you have it! Making money as a copywriter is totally achievable with the right mindset and strategies (and work, ugh, sorry).
